The Importance of Nutrition

The importance of nutrition in your daily lifestyles cannot be stressed enough.

People embark on their health and fitness journeys not really knowing much about nutrition and how it affects their mind, bodies and performance. The first things I would suggest to anyone wanting to become fitter and healthier?! Do some research or hire a professional.

What is Nutrition?

The basic answer? It is how we fuel our bodies to be able to live and perform to our full potentials each and every day. It is the process of obtaining the food necessary for health and growth.

The Nutrients

The essential nutrients our bodies require are carbohydrates, fats and proteins as well as fibre, vitamins and minerals. Getting good nutrition means getting the right amount and combination of nutrients from healthy foods. Sounds complicated right!? It really isn’t. Nutrition starts from the day we are born and sticks with us until the day we die. It’s what you fuel yourself with between those times that will ultimately decide whether you are a healthy individual or not.

Nutrients are required for your body to function and be healthy. Eating right is the cornerstone of a healthy lifestyle. All nutrients play a different part in your body. As I want this article to be easy to digest and simple, I am not going to go into all the details about each individual nutrient. Just make sure your body is getting a good balance of all nutrients for optimum performance.

How do I know if I am getting the Nutrients I need?

The simplest way for me to explain this is by saying this- a healthy and balanced diet. ALL of the nutrients mentioned above are required to function properly. The three main nutrients- Carbs, Fats and Proteins- contain many of the essential vitamins and minerals you need within them too. Having a ‘balanced plate’ of food at all meals ensures you are getting in those three most important nutrients, therefor also getting in plenty of vitamins and minerals. For example- a plate of- One chicken breast (protein), sweet potato wedges (carbs) and a salad with avocado (fats) would be a perfectly balanced plate. Within all of those food items there is also a huge selection of vitamins and minerals too. Please note that this is only an example and there are millions of combinations of foods so you can ensure you are getting all of the nutrients you need.

What Nutrition means to me

To me having a healthy and balanced diet is what makes me happy. I know I am looking after my body as I am fuelling it with the correct nutrients. I haven’t always been this way. Like everybody else I started off knowing very little about nutrition and health. But, I hired a personal trainer who coached me and taught me about nutrition (as well as exercise and fitness). I also do a lot of my own research into nutrition and health and have begun to study nutrition with a view to educate people about the importance of this.
